Assistive technology in the form of iPads and apps that allow children with language delays or disabilities to properly communicate their needs and wants to their families has become a powerful tool in their development.

We offered mom’s iPad to Matthew to probe for his interest/ability to communicate. I coached mom on pairing it instantly with the actual item. Although he was not hungry, Matthew began touching the pictures and mom handed him the food item. He pushed it away and touched another picture. After a few moments he began smiling, stomping his feet, and flapping his hands. He touched the pictures, looked at mom, turned away when she offered the food, but then immediately turned back and vocalized “aahhhahhadaaaa” to have access to the iPad again. Eventually he used it to deliberately ask for Cheerios and yogurt. Huge grin on his face. I think this is the FIRST time he has been able to get what he wanted using a symbol/language. He has used words in the past, but they were rare and not consistent. Here, for the first time, was super easy language and he could do it over and over, every time, and his mom would react every time. Smile, stomp, bopping up and down, super excited. Totally engaged. Language is so powerful. It was magical.
